Stair Rail And Shadow Composition

A rusted metal stair rail and its shadow on the side of a freight forwarding warehouse in South San Francisco, California. This was shot late in the evening, and all of the shadows had a bluish tint to them due to the sunlight filtering through a thick fog that was rolling in.

I had the pleasure of visiting my friends Mark Kitaoka and Tracy Martin in the San Francisco Bay Area this past weekend. In addition to having an opportunity to make some new images, Mark and Tracy also hosted a picnic in San Mateo's Central Park, where I got to meet Diane Varner as well. It was a great weekend, and nice to connect with old and new friends, and my sister and brother-in-law too.

This is my 300th photoblog post! It is also one of the first images I have made using the incredible AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lens. I have not done a lot of previous work using ultra-wide lenses, and I am excited about the creative possibilities that this superb piece of glass allows for.

Also, this past week, I signed on for professional representation by pieces fine art, a Los Angeles area art dealer. I am excited about the possibilities that could result from greater exposure in the Los Angeles market.

It does not seem like that long ago when I started up this photoblog and began to publish my work online. But it has been nearly 2.5 years. So thanks to everyone who continues to visit, and comment here.

UPDATE (June 6, 2008): If you check this photoblog from time to time, you might be wondering where I have been. I am still around, but I have not had much time to do photography lately. My industry (Real Estate Development) is getting hit pretty hard by the US Economy right now, and I also have two projects at critical stages in the approval process. So I have had very little free time lately. This summer, I should get past a couple of major milestone events on my projects and then be able to start posting regularly again. Sorry for the delay.

Leadbetter Point #1

I made this exposure in daylight using a 3-stop neutral density filter stacked on a 10-stop neutral density filter. This is a process I am experimenting with because it renders similar long exposure effects to shooting at night, but accurate colors that would be observed during daylight.

I have been on hiatus for a while, preoccupied by work and other parts of my life. Also I just have not be "seeing" too many good subjects lately. However, I figured that after more than six weeks, and some prodding by friends, it was time to post a new image.

January is going to be exceptionally busy for me at work, but I hope to get out and make some more images soon.

UPDATE (January 16, 2008): I upgraded to the latest verion of Pixelpost today so that I could get the latest security enhancements for this site. Everything appears to have gone smoothly with the exception of some minor bugs that do not effect critical functionality. Bus Terminal

A homeless man sleeps in an exterior walkway at the downtown San Francisco bus terminal. Normally, I would not photograph a homeless person, but I was far enough away from this individual to preserve his anonymity, and focus purely on his situation.

I visited the bay area this past weekend, where I got to see my sister Jessica, brother-in-law Jonathan, and my friends Mark Kitaoka, Tracy Martin, George Illes, and King Douglass. Our friend Vernon Trent even managed to come over from Germany to join us.

Jonathan came out to shoot with me Saturday evening while we were waiting to go back and pick up my sister from work. This is one of the shots we got.

I was originally intending to make an image out of the yellow covered outriggers alone, and this guy walked into one of my shots. But in the end, this turned out to be my favorite of the exposures.

Also, if you are visiting, or passing through Santa Barbara this coming weekend, make sure and check out the 2007 Santa Barbara Festival Of Art at the County Courthouse Sunken Gardens, where I will be exhibiting and selling prints. The festival runs from October 12th through October 14th, and features work from approximately 80 jury-selected artists, food, wine, and live music. Parking Structure #22

For some reason, the subtle lighting that reveals detail throughout the dark areas of this image when I view it in Photoshop/Bridge/Etc., is not translating over when the file is uploaded to my photoblog. I will try to correct this later this evening.

UPDATE (October 7, 2007): I have replaced the original image file with a slightly brighter one this afternoon. I still don't think that it is showing the dark-area detail well enough when I view it on the website in bright conditions, but there is no doubt the correct detail does show up when viewed in dark ambient conditions. So if you look at this image, and it doesn't look quite right to you, come back and check it out again when you can view it in a dark room. Also if you are interested, you can view the original posted version here .
